In brief: a gaming laptop is worth it if you need to play or work on the move: studies, trips, LAN, small accommodation. Its limits are well known: for the same budget, it’s less powerful than a desktop PC, it’s noisier, and you can’t upgrade its graphics card. In 2026, aim for at least a RTX 5060 Laptop, 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD and a 144 Hz (or higher) screen. If you play 90% at home, a desktop PC remains the best choice.
Why choose a gaming laptop?
The number one reason is freedom. One device for classes or work during the day, and to game in the evening, wherever you are: at home, at a friend’s, on the train or at a LAN. For a student in a kot or anyone who’s short on space, it’s also a complete PC that slides away in a drawer, screen, keyboard and touchpad included.
Recent gaming laptops are also real creation machines: their dedicated graphics card speeds up video editing, 3D work or AI software, something a standard laptop can’t do.

Play or work anywhere, this is exactly what a gaming laptop is for.
Gaming laptop or desktop PC: the real comparison
| Criteria | Gaming laptop | Gaming desktop PC |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | Yes, anywhere | No |
| Performance for the same budget | Lower | Higher |
| Noise while gaming | Often high | Controlled with a good case |
| Upgradability | RAM and SSD depending on the models; never the graphics card | Everything can be replaced, piece by piece |
| Screen, keyboard, mouse | Included | To plan for additionally |
| Repair | More delicate | Easy, component by component |
Our builder’s take, no beating around the bush: we assemble desktop PCs, but we also sell MSI laptops, because for some uses, that’s the right answer. If you game almost always in the same place, the desktop wins on every front. If you move around a lot, the gaming laptop is the way to go. We cover the other side of the question in why buy a desktop PC in 2026.
Watch out for graphics card naming
A “Laptop” RTX isn’t the same card as the one with the same name for a desktop PC. It’s less powerful, often comes with less memory, and performance varies depending on the electrical power the manufacturer allows. So two laptops with the same graphics card can deliver different results.
| Graphics card | Memory (laptop version) | Memory (desktop PC version) |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5060 Laptop | 8 GB | 8 GB |
| RTX 5070 Laptop | 8 GB (12 GB version since April 2026) | 12 GB |
| RTX 5070 Ti Laptop | 12 GB | 16 GB |
| RTX 5080 Laptop | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| RTX 5090 Laptop | 24 GB | 32 GB |
