WoW Plunderstorm: the battle royale from World of Warcraft, dates and return

How it works, subscription, the 2024 and 2025 editions, and what we know about a return

By the FlowUP team, gaming PC builder in Genappe (Belgium) · Updated 29 September 2026

In short: Plunderstorm is the battle royale mode in World of Warcraft: 60 players, matches lasting 10 to 15 minutes in the Arathi Highlands, and the last one standing wins. It’s a limited-time event: launched on 19 March 2024, it ran again from 15 January to 26 February 2025 (European dates). To play, you needed a World of Warcraft subscription or game time, with no expansion purchase. By the end of September 2026, Blizzard has announced no further return: the mode therefore isn’t playable for now.

What is WoW Plunderstorm?

Plunderstorm is Blizzard’s answer to the question, “What would World of Warcraft look like as a battle royale?”. You drop 60 players onto the map; each one picks up spells and upgrades from chests and monsters, and a storm shrinks the playable area until there’s only one survivor, or one team, left.

The mode runs alongside the main game: you launch it from the World of Warcraft menu, but it has no impact on your characters’ progression. What you do get, however, are cosmetic rewards (mounts, pets, appearances) that you can use later in WoW.

World of Warcraft, “Plunderstorm Returns”, January 2025.

How does a match work?

No need to know the WoW classes: the game generates a random character for you, which you can customise before you set off. In 2025, a training lobby let you test spells and set up your key bindings before the first match, and then you chose your landing point on the map.

Once you’re on the ground, everything comes down to loot. Chests and enemies give offensive and utility spells; picking up the same spell multiple times raises it up to rank 3. Meanwhile, the storm advances and pushes everyone toward the centre. If you fall, you can watch the end of the match from your teammates’ view or from other players’ perspectives.

In every match, you build up loot, the mode’s currency, which you spend in the Plunderstorm shop. One detail that matters: you don’t need to win to earn rewards. Even a shortened match helps advance your collection.

Do you need a subscription to play Plunderstorm?

Yes. Plunderstorm was never free like Fortnite or Warzone: Blizzard required a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. However, no expansion was necessary. Players of WoW Classic could also participate, provided they installed the modern game client via the Battle.net app.

To start a match, you selected Plunderstorm in the mode menu, on the character select screen, and then chose Solo, Duo or Trio. Players who were already in-game could also join the queue via the PvP tab in the group finder.

Will Plunderstorm return?

At the time of writing, at the end of September 2026, Blizzard has announced no third edition. The mode returned once, about ten months after its launch, which shows that Blizzard sees it as a one-off event rather than a permanent mode. Our take: a return is still possible, but nothing allows us to pin down a date. We’ll update this article as soon as an official announcement is made.

Which PC for World of Warcraft?

World of Warcraft isn’t particularly demanding compared with the latest AAA games, but it has one standout feature you often notice in the workshop: in very crowded areas, in raids, or in a 60-player melee, it’s the processor that limits frames per second far more than the graphics card. So a good processor, ideally a Ryzen X3D with its large cache, does more for smooth gameplay than a high-end graphics card.

Our advice as a PC builder: a current mid-range gaming PC runs WoW without any trouble in 1080p and 1440p. Move up a tier if you also play heavier games, or if you’re aiming for a high-refresh-rate monitor. The minimum and recommended configurations change with each expansion: check them on the game page in the Battle.net store.

For WoW, the processor matters as much as the graphics card as soon as the screen fills up with players.
