Intel confirms: no more BIOS updates needed!
Intel has officially put an end to the overvoltage issue affecting its 13th Gen and 14th Gen Core processors.
The company has rolled out its fourth and final mitigation update, confirming that no further updates will be required for these processors.
This final fix takes the form of the 0x12B microcode update, which is currently being distributed by motherboard manufacturers.
Problems resolved by Intel
Over the past year, Intel identified four major issues with the Raptor Lake processors, each of them addressed by a series of fixes.
The latest 0x12B microcode includes all previous mitigations and definitively resolves instability issues related to overvolting.
- Motherboard power settings exceeding Intel’s recommendations.
Solution : Default recommendations for 13th- and 14th-Gen Core desktop processors. - eTVB algorithm that enabled i9 processors to run at high performance levels even at high temperatures.
Solution : Microcode 0x125 (June 2024) fixes the eTVB algorithm. - Microcode SVID algorithm requesting high voltages that caused a Vmin shift.
Solution : Microcode 0x129 (August 2024) to handle these excessive voltage requests. - High core voltages during idle periods or light activity.
Solution : The 0x12B microcode corrects these overvoltage requests during idling.
No additional update planned
Intel has confirmed through a spokesperson, Thomas Hannaford, that the root cause of these overvoltages was indeed the Vmin Shift algorithm, and that it has now been fixed.
So there will be no further microcode updates or BIOS updates required for these processors.
What about processors that have already been affected?
Intel has not published a tool to easily check whether a processor has been affected by these issues. However, affected users can contact Intel customer support to request a replacement if necessary.
Finally, Intel has assured that future processors, in particular those in the Core Ultra 200 range, will not be affected by these overvoltage issues.
This means that new-generation platforms, both for desktop and mobile computers, should be free from these problems.
