Major Developments in the World of NVIDIA GPUs

There’s no denying that NVIDIA holds a dominant position in the graphics technology industry. Over the years, the company has been at the forefront of innovation, consistently delivering products that push the limits of what we expect from graphics cards. However, 2022 and 2023 have been particularly exciting years, with a multitude of captivating developments. 

Here’s an update on NVIDIA’s most recent advances in the world of GPUs.

The Newcomers : The RTX 4000 Series

NVIDIA’s RTX 4000 series was launched starting in October 2022 with the RTX 4090, followed by the RTX 4080 in November 2022, the RTX 4070 Ti in January 2023, the RTX 4070 in April 2023, and the RTX 4060 Ti planned for May 2023

. Laptop versions of these GPUs were also released during the first quarter of 2023.

A Revolutionary Architecture : Ada Lovelace

The RTX 4000 series is based on the new Ada Lovelace architecture, a significant improvement over the Ampere architecture of the RTX 3000 series. 

Ada Lovelace is built on TSMC’s 4N process, representing a significant step forward compared with Samsung’s 8nm Ampere chips. This reduction in node size brings two major benefits: more performance for less power.

Technical Specifications : A Generational Leap

Compared with the previous RTX 3090, the new RTX 4000 series offers a significant improvement in performance. For example, the RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores, a base clock of 2510 MHz, a boost clock of 2210 MHz, and 24GB of GDDR6X memory. By comparison, the RTX 3090 had 10,496 CUDA cores, a base clock of 1395 MHz, a boost clock of 1695 MHz, and 24GB of GDDR6X memory.

Rumours also suggest that the RTX 4060 Ti could come with a version offering 8GB and 16GB of VRAM, while the RTX 4060 could also have a 16GB version, although that seems less likely.

As for NVIDIA’s true flagship, leaks suggest that a GPU nicknamed “The Beast” could be the 4090 Ti, the Titan, or perhaps even end up with a completely different name. This GPU is expected to have 12,432 CUDA cores and 48GB of GDDR6X running at 24 Gbps, with far more bandwidth than a terabyte per second.

Performance : A Spectacular Leap

Despite the price increases, the performance gains we’re seeing with the RTX 4090 could justify the higher costs. For example, in the Total War: Warhammer 3 1440p benchmark by Gamers Nexus, the RTX 4090 is almost 40% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, and 45% faster than the RTX 3090.

Changes in the Graphics Card Manufacturer Landscape

A major development in the graphics card manufacturer landscape is that EVGA will no longer produce graphics cards from this generation. The decision would be a consequence of NVIDIA’s appalling treatment of its partners—particularly keeping EVGA in the dark about GPU pricing and constantly competing with them—which has reduced their profit margins while NVIDIA’s profit margins have risen.

The Future : The RTX 5000 Series
