PS5 Pro: when and what price?

PS5 Pro: Everything you need to know about Sony’s new console!

Sony is getting ready to unveil its brand-new handheld console, the PS5 Pro, positioned as the “mid-gen” update between the current PS5 and the future PS6.

In this article, we reveal everything we already know about this much-anticipated console.

A “mid-gen” console?

Mid-generation consoles are nothing new for the biggest names in video games. After the launch of the PS4 at the end of 2013, Sony refreshed its machine three years later with the PS4 Pro, in late 2016.

So it makes sense for the Japanese giant to repeat this strategy with the current generation. With more than three years having passed since the release of the PS5, it was only natural to expect a next update.

The available information mainly comes from various reputable sources in the gaming world. Although nothing has yet been officially confirmed, the details gathered come from reliable sources such as Digital Foundry, giving them solid credibility.

Unless Sony decides to radically change its plans, here’s an overview of what we can expect from the PlayStation 5 Pro, also known internally by the codename “Project Trinity”.

Anticipated Release Date

Sony remains tight-lipped about the next console, but promising signs are emerging with the distribution of development kits as early as 2024. Everything points to a release towards the end of the year, even though the exact date still needs to be confirmed. After the difficulties of the standard PS5, Sony is taking the time needed for a smooth launch.

Too Expensive?

With improvements expected, the PS5 Pro should logically be priced higher than previous versions. At around €599, it would align with expectations for performance and quality.

The question remains regarding availability of the models, between the digital version and one with a disc drive.

An Enigmatic Design

The mystery remains around the design of its new star. Sony, known for listening to its users, should combine aesthetics with practicality. If we go by past history, an evolution of the standard PS5’s design is likely

Modularity, as seen with the PS5 Slim, could be a major advantage, offering players more flexibility in how they choose their setup.

Explosive Performance from the PS5 Pro 💥

A Power Upgrade

The PS5 Pro promises a genuine technological revolution, backed by reputable sources such as Digital Foundry. While it keeps the same processor as the PS5 Slim, it targets a significant increase in clock speed, with a CPU running at 3.85 GHz—an increase of 10%

And don’t worry—the graphical power isn’t being left behind either, with a new AMD RDNA 3 GPU, offering 60 compute units, or almost double that of the standard PS5.

Stunning Visual Performance

With a dramatic increase in compute power to 33.5 TFLOPS (i.e. triple that of the PS5) and an improved memory capacity of 28%, it delivers an incomparable gaming experience. Power won’t, however, be multiplied by 3—but you can expect a 45% increase in throughput during gameplay.

Thanks to wider memory bandwidth and a faster 1TB flash storage, load times are effectively wiped out, providing total immersion in the world of gaming.

State-of-the-Art Sound and Graphics

Sony doesn’t stop there: the console’s audio engine is 35% faster, making it easier to process complex tasks. In addition, the VRS technology—adopted on the Xbox Series—provides variable rate shading for optimal image quality, without compromising on smoothness.

Ray Tracing Takes Centre Stage on the PS5 Pro

A Visual Revolution

Ray tracing, introduced with the PS5, reaches new heights with its Pro version. This groundbreaking technology simulates the spread of light for ultra-realistic visual effects.

With ray-tracing performance up to twice as fast as the standard PS5, players will be immersed in stunning virtual worlds, thanks to sophisticated lighting effects and realistic shadows.

AI Innovation: PSSR 🧠

But the real star of tomorrow’s console is the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Resolution), an AI-based upscaling technology. Comparable to Nvidia’s DLSS, PSSR converts the games’ internal rendering into a 4K image in record time. With the ability to reach 120 FPS in 4K and even 8K games at 30 FPS, the PS5 Pro opens up new possibilities for developers and players.

Gaming Experience on PS5 Pro

More Dazzling Games

With this gaming console, get ready for an incomparable gaming experience. Thanks to improved performance and PSSR technology, some games will truly be enhanced on this new console. And no need to worry about your current PS5 games—backward compatibility is here, so you won’t have to buy them again.

Stability and Smoothness

Digital Foundry expects increased game stability, thanks to the higher CPU clock speed. Frame-rate drops will be less frequent, ensuring a smooth gaming experience even with the most demanding titles.

Improved Resources for Developers 🛠

Developers will have access to 13.7 GB of VRAM, which is 1.2 GB more than on the PS5. These extra resources provide more flexibility to enhance game rendering, especially with PSSR and improved ray tracing.

No New Controller in Sight

Unlike the competition, the Playstation 5 Pro does not plan a new controller. Sony has quietly released an improved version of the DualSense earlier this year, including better battery life. So you can expect this version to come alongside the PS5 Pro, giving players an even more immersive gaming experience.

In brief ...

The PS5 Pro’s spec sheet reveals impressive specifications, promising players a smooth experience with consistent 60 fps performance while gaming.

This pro model of the PlayStation 5 stands out clearly from the standard PS5, offering a significant improvement in terms of power and processing capacity. Thanks to the carefully designed ps5 pro specs, this pro model raises the bar for gaming—delivering not only exceptional smoothness in even the most demanding titles, but also unprecedented visual immersion.

With advanced technical features, the PS5 Pro looks set to be the console of choice for gamers seeking ultimate performance, while still remaining compatible with the existing library of the standard PS5—ensuring a smooth transition for all PlayStation fans.
