Direct answer: the GeForce RTX 5090 comes with 32 GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit bus, while the RTX 5080 has 16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus. There is no RTX 5080 with 32 GB. Both cards were unveiled by NVIDIA at CES 2025 and launched on 30 January 2025, at $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080.
We shared these specs back in December 2024, when they were still just leaks from PC Acer data sheets. They’ve since been confirmed: here are the official specs and what these memory capacities really change.
RTX 5090 and RTX 5080: the official specification sheet
| Spec | RTX 5090 | RTX 5080 |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell (GB202) | Blackwell (GB203) |
| CUDA cores | 21,760 | 10,752 |
| Boost clock | 2.41 GHz | 2.62 GHz |
| Video memory | 32 GB GDDR7 | 16 GB GDDR7 |
| Memory bus | 512-bit | 256-bit |
| Power draw (TGP) | 575 W | 360 W |
| Recommended PSU | 1,000 W | 850 W |
| Release date and launch price | 30 January 2025, $1,999 | 30 January 2025, $999 |

The difference is clear: the RTX 5090 has twice as many CUDA cores, twice the memory, and a bus that’s twice as wide as the RTX 5080. It also uses 215 W more, which calls for a solid PSU and a well-ventilated case (see our power supply guide).
Is there an RTX 5080 with 32 GB or 24 GB?
No, not to date. The RTX 5080 is only available with 16 GB. A 24 GB RTX 5080 Super with 24 GB of GDDR7 was expected, but in January 2026, TweakTown reported that NVIDIA had postponed the entire RTX 50 Super line indefinitely, partly due to the rise in memory prices. So beware of announcements for “RTX 5080 32 GB”: in most cases, this is confusion with the RTX 5090, or with the PC’s system RAM.
32 GB or 16 GB of VRAM: what’s it really for?

For gaming, 16 GB is enough, including in 4K with textures turned up to the maximum in the vast majority of today’s games. The 32 GB on the RTX 5090 aren’t there to gain extra frames per second: its performance comes from its cores.
Where those 32 GB make a difference is outside gaming: running local AI models, 3D rendering of heavy scenes, 8K video editing, or extreme modding with massive texture packs.
| Use | Recommended VRAM | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| 1440p gaming | 12 to 16 GB | RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti |
| 4K gaming | 16 GB | RTX 5080 |
| Extreme 4K, path tracing, heavy modding | 16 GB and up | RTX 5080, RTX 5090 |
| Local AI, 3D rendering, 8K | 24 to 32 GB | RTX 5090 |

RTX 5080 or RTX 5090: which one should you choose?
The RTX 5080 for gaming in 4K, the RTX 5090 if you create as much as you play. The RTX 5080 holds 4K at high refresh rates with DLSS 4 and stays reasonable in power draw. The RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s most powerful consumer card, but its price doubles for a much smaller gaming gain. It’s mainly justified for AI, 3D work, or 4K without any compromises. If you game in 1440p, a RTX 5070 or an RTX 5070 Ti makes more sense.

FAQ about the VRAM on the RTX 5090 and 5080
How much VRAM does the RTX 5090 have?
32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus. It’s NVIDIA’s best-equipped consumer card in terms of video memory.
How much VRAM does the RTX 5080 have?
16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus. There is no 32 GB version.
Will there be an RTX 5080 Super with more memory?
A 24 GB RTX 5080 Super was expected. In January 2026, TweakTown reported that NVIDIA had postponed indefinitely the entire RTX 50 Super lineup. Nothing had been officially confirmed as of the update date of this article.
Is 16 GB of VRAM enough for 4K?
Yes for the vast majority of today’s games, even in ultra settings. The exceptions mainly involve heavy path tracing and modding with very heavy textures.
What power supply do I need for an RTX 5090?
NVIDIA recommends a 1,000 W power supply for a PC with an RTX 5090, and 850 W for an RTX 5080. Choose a high-quality model, certified 80 Plus Gold or better, with a native 12V-2x6 connector.
