In brief: Raptor Lake Refresh is the 14th generation of Intel Core processors, launched in October 2023 (Core i5-14600K, i7-14700K, i9-14900K), then completed in January 2024 with the non-K models such as the Core i5-14400F. In 2026, it’s still a good choice for gaming, especially the 14400F for its price and the 14700K for its power, on one condition: a BIOS up to date with microcode 0x12F, which fixes the 2024 instability issue.
Raptor Lake Refresh, what is it?
It’s an update to the 13th generation (Raptor Lake), not a new architecture. Intel kept the same foundation, the same LGA1700 socket and the same manufacturing process, then raised the clock speeds and added efficient cores on the Core i7. Result: modest gains compared with the 13th generation, but a mature platform, compatible with DDR4 and DDR5, and affordable B760 and Z790 motherboards.
Since then, Intel has moved on to the 15th generation, the Core Ultra 200S (Arrow Lake), on a new socket. Our article Intel 15th generation goes into the details.

The LGA1700 socket supports both the 12th, 13th and 14th Intel generations.

| Processor | Cores | Threads | Max frequency | TDP / max power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core i9-14900K | 24 (8 P + 16 E) | 32 | 6.0 GHz | 125 W / 253 W |
| Core i7-14700K | 20 (8 P + 12 E) | 28 | 5.6 GHz | 125 W / 253 W |
| Core i5-14600K | 14 (6 P + 8 E) | 20 | 5.3 GHz | 125 W / 181 W |

How good is the 14th generation for gaming in 2026?
Tom’s Hardware’s ranking compares processors for gaming at 1080p with an RTX 5090, so the graphics card doesn’t limit anything. The scores are expressed as a percentage of the fastest processor, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D:
| Processor | Gaming score (1080p) |
|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 97% |
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 85.6% |
| Core i9-14900K | 78.2% |
| Core i7-14700K | 76.4% |
| Core i5-14600K | 72.8% |
| Core Ultra 9 285K | 71.8% |
| Core Ultra 7 265K | 70.3% |
| Ryzen 5 7600X | 67.3% |
| Core i5-14400 | 58% |

Our builder’s take: the Ryzen X3D chips are still the kings of gaming, but Intel’s 14th generation holds up very well. The Core i7-14700K even performs better in games than the Core Ultra 200S that followed it. And these differences are most noticeable in 1080p with a very high-end card: at 1440p or 4K, it’s the graphics card that makes the difference.
The Core i5-14400F is a special case: slower on paper, but more than enough for an RTX 5060 Ti or an RX 9060 XT, thanks to its restrained price. That’s why we include it in several of our PCs. To compare with AMD, see Intel or AMD and our ranking of the best gaming processors.

An Intel processor in place: the 14th generation remains a solid foundation for a gaming PC in 2026.
Has the instability issue been resolved?
Yes, for healthy processors. In 2024, some 13th- and 14th-generation Core i7 and i9 processors became unstable due to an excessively high voltage requested by the microcode. Intel fixed the problem through BIOS updates, up to microcode 0x12F, and extended the warranty by two years. On a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel PC, the only thing to do is therefore to keep the BIOS up to date. Everything is explained in instability of Intel 13th and 14th-generation CPUs and, step by step, in updating the BIOS.

FAQ: Intel 14th generation
What is Raptor Lake Refresh?
The code name for the 14th generation of Intel Core processors: an update to the 13th generation (Raptor Lake) on the same LGA1700 socket.
When did Intel’s 14th generation launch?
On 17 October 2023 for the K models, then in January 2024 for the other models, such as the Core i5-14400F.
Is a 14th-generation Intel processor still worth it in 2026?
Yes, for gaming. The Core i7-14700K remains faster in games than the Core Ultra 7 265K, according to Tom's Hardware, and the Core i5-14400F is more than enough for a mid-range graphics card. Just keep the BIOS up to date.
Which motherboard for a 14th-generation processor?
An LGA1700 motherboard with a B760 or Z790 chipset (and, with a recent BIOS, B660 or Z690). The Z790 is useful for overclocking K models.
Is the 14th generation compatible with DDR4?
Yes, it supports DDR4 and DDR5, depending on the motherboard you choose.
