The end of AMD graphics cards? Where does Radeon stand in 2026

RX 6000, RX 9000 and RDNA 5

In brief: no, AMD is not stopping its graphics cards. In 2024, it was the production of the RX 6000 series (RDNA 2 architecture) that ended, which is where the rumour comes from. Since 2025, AMD has been selling the Radeon RX 9000 range (RDNA 4): RX 9070 XT, RX 9070 and RX 9060 XT. The next generation, RDNA 5, isn’t expected before the second half of 2027, according to AMD partners interviewed at Computex 2026. And the RX 6000 cards are still getting drivers.

Where does the rumour about the end of AMD cards come from?

In spring 2024, the Radeon RX 6000 became increasingly scarce at resellers: their production had been stopped. A few months later, in September 2024, AMD said in an interview with Tom’s Hardware that its next generation would target the mid-range rather than the very high end, to gain market share. That was all it took to talk about the "end of AMD cards".

At the end of 2025, a new controversy erupted when AMD announced it would put the RX 5000 and RX 6000 drivers into "maintenance mode". In response to the backlash, AMD clarified that these cards would continue to receive optimisations for new games, alongside the RX 7000 and RX 9000.

The RX 6000 left the shelves in 2024, but Radeon is very much alive: time for the RX 9000s.

The Radeon line-up in 2026

The successor to the RX 6000 and RX 7000 is called RX 9000. AMD skipped the "RX 8000" name and adopted numbering close to NVIDIA’s (9070 vs 5070) to make comparison easier. We tell you the story in our article about the RX 8800 XT turned into RX 9070 XT.

Our assembler’s verdict

In rasterisation, the RX 9070 XT matches the RTX 5070 Ti, and the RX 9070 goes ahead of the RTX 5070. This is the best Radeon generation in a long time. NVIDIA keeps the edge in ray tracing, and with DLSS 4’s multi-frame generation, but AMD has closed a good part of its gap in upscaling with FSR 4, which is AI-based and reserved for RX 9000.

And after that? RDNA 5

AMD has announced no official date. At Computex 2026, several partner card manufacturers mentioned new Radeon products they expect to play as early as the second half of 2027, with some betting on early 2028. These are not confirmed by AMD, but they indicate that the RX 9000 will remain AMD’s current Radeon line-up for at least another year.

Should you still buy an RX 6000?

On the second-hand market, an RX 6700 XT or an RX 6800 can still do the job in 1080p and 1440p, and the drivers are still there. But they don’t benefit from FSR 4, and at a similar price, a new RX 9060 XT 16 GB is the safer choice. For the details on a card from this generation, see our review of the RX 6600 XT in 2026.

FAQ: AMD graphics cards

Does AMD stop its graphics cards?

No. AMD has been selling the Radeon RX 9000 range since 2025 and is preparing the RDNA 5 generation. Only the production of the older RX 6000 cards was stopped, in 2024.

What is the most powerful AMD graphics card in 2026?

For gaming, the RX 7900 XTX remains the fastest in pure rasterisation, but the RX 9070 XT is the newest and most complete, with FSR 4 and better ray tracing performance.

When will the next AMD cards be released?

No official date. AMD partners mentioned at Computex 2026 the second half of 2027 at the earliest for the Radeon RDNA 5.

Are the RX 6000 still getting drivers?

Yes. After the “maintenance mode” controversy at the end of 2025, AMD confirmed that the RX 5000 and RX 6000 will continue to receive optimisations for new games.

RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti?

They’re neck and neck in rasterisation, according to Tom's Hardware. The RTX 5070 Ti has the advantage in ray tracing, and with DLSS 4, the RX 9070 XT is often cheaper: it’s the current price that decides.
