In brief: at CES 2024, MSI unveiled its range of QD-OLED gaming monitors: from 27 to 49 inches, up to 4K at 240 Hz and QHD at 360 Hz, with a response time of 0.03 ms, the VESA ClearMR 13000 certification, passive cooling with graphene, and OLED Care 2.0 technology. In February 2024, MSI added a 3-year warranty covering burn-in. In 2026, QD-OLED remains one of the best display technologies for gaming.

QD-OLED: what is it?

An OLED screen has no backlight: each pixel generates its own light and can switch off completely. The result is perfect blacks, nearly infinite contrast, and a response time of around 0.03 ms, far faster than an LCD display.

QD-OLED, developed by Samsung Display, adds a layer of quantum dot boxes (quantum dots) that converts the blue light from the pixels into red and green. This produces more saturated and brighter colours. The other major OLED technology for PCs is LG Display’s WOLED, which uses a different sub-pixel structure.

QD-OLED models from MSI’s 2024 range covered by the 3-year warranty against burn-in, according to MSI’s announcement of 6 February 2024.

These displays shared several points: a 0.03 ms response time, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, a USB-C port capable of delivering up to 90 W, HDMI 2.1, and fanless cooling, with a heatsink and a graphene film to limit the heat from the panel. OLED Care 2.0 technology detects fixed elements (logos, the taskbar, bezels) to limit burn-in.

ClearMR 13000: what does it mean?

ClearMR is a VESA certification that measures the sharpness of moving images. It compares the number of sharp pixels to the number of blurry pixels in a fast scene. A ClearMR 3000 display shows between 2,500 and 3,500% more sharp pixels than blurry ones. With ClearMR 13000, MSI’s QD-OLED screens exceed 12,500%: motion blur is practically absent, which you can see in fast-paced shooters.

Our assembler’s take: for gaming, especially in a dimly lit room, an OLED screen really changes the experience. To get the most out of it, you need a PC that can keep up: an RTX 5070 Ti or an RX 9070 XT for 1440p at high refresh rates, an RTX 5080 for 4K. If you’re still unsure about resolution and refresh rate, our guide which gaming monitor to choose in 2026 covers the whole question, and our article on the 1000 Hz displays shows where the race for refresh rate is headed.

FAQ: QD-OLED screens

What is a QD-OLED screen?

A Samsung Display OLED screen whose colours are produced by a layer of quantum dot boxes. It combines OLED’s perfect blacks with highly saturated colours.

Which MSI QD-OLED screens did it show at CES 2024?

In particular the MPG 321URX and MAG 321UPX (32 inches, 4K, 240 Hz), the MPG 271QRX and MAG 271QPX (27 inches, QHD, 360 Hz) and the MPG 491CQP (curved 49 inches).

What does VESA ClearMR 13000 mean?

If the screen shows between 12,500 and 13,500% more sharp pixels than blurry pixels in fast scenes: motion blur is practically absent.

Can an OLED screen be affected by burn-in?

Yes, with fixed elements displayed for a very long time. Software protections limit it, and some brands cover it: MSI announced in February 2024 a 3-year warranty that includes burn-in coverage on its QD-OLED displays.

Which graphics card for a 4K OLED display at 240 Hz?

A RTX 5080 or better to get closer to the screen’s refresh rate in recent games, with DLSS. In 1440p at high refresh rates, an RTX 5070 Ti or an RX 9070 XT is suitable.
