In brief: the best gaming processor in 2026 is the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, ahead of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (3% behind for less money) and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, in Tom's Hardware’s August 2026 processor ranking. The Ryzen X3D chips dominate thanks to their large 3D cache. In the mid-range, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D remains excellent, the Ryzen 5 7500X3D is the best value, and on the Intel side the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus (March 2026) catches up with the Core i9-14900K. If you play at 1440p or 4K, a mid-range CPU is often enough: it’s the graphics card that becomes the limiting factor.
Why X3D chips crush everything in games
In games, the processor spends its time fetching data from memory. The more of it it keeps close by in its cache, the less it has to wait. That’s the whole idea behind the Ryzen X3D: an extra stack of cache on the chip, which boosts FPS in CPU-heavy games, especially at 1080p and high refresh rates.
We explain it in detail in our CPU guide (processor) and its different cache levels.

Our picks by budget
| Profile | Processor | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The fastest | Ryzen 7 9850X3D | Fastest in games, but only 3% ahead of the 9800X3D for around 30% higher power consumption in games, according to Tom's Hardware |
| The best high-end choice | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | Almost the same performance, for less money |
| Gaming and creation | Ryzen 9 9950X3D | 16 cores for editing and rendering, 3D cache for gaming |
| Mid-range | Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Core Ultra 7 270K Plus | The previous generation’s X3D still comes out on top in games; the 270K Plus has more cores for everything else |
| Low budget | Ryzen 5 7500X3D | 3D cache for the price of a 6-core CPU |

AMD or Intel in 2026?
For pure gaming, AMD has the edge thanks to the X3D: even the 2023 Ryzen 7 7800X3D remains ahead of every Intel processor in the ranking. Intel fights back with the Core Ultra 200S Plus released in March 2026: the 270K Plus matches a Core i9-14900K in games, according to TechSpot, for far less money, while keeping more cores for multitasking. It fits into existing 800-series motherboards.
For the complete comparison between the two brands, read Intel or AMD: which processor should you choose for a gaming PC in 2026.

AMD or Intel: in games, X3D chips keep the advantage in 2026.
Do you need a high-end processor to game?
Not necessarily. The difference between processors is most noticeable at 1080p and at very high FPS, in competitive games and simulations. At 1440p and 4K, it’s almost always the graphics card that limits you: a 9850X3D and a 7500X3D deliver then very similar results. It’s better to get a mid-range CPU and a better graphics card than a high-end CPU held back by a card that’s too weak. What’s coming: Zen 6 and Nova Lake
On the AMD side, the Zen 6 processors (code name Olympic Ridge) will stay on the AM5 platform, which AMD has confirmed in its technical documentation: a new AM5 motherboard bought today will be able to host them. Their release date isn’t official; multiple leaks point to 2027.
On the Intel side, Nova Lake will switch sockets (LGA1954). In March 2026, Intel talked about a launch “before 2027”; a September leak mentions first models in early 2027. To choose your platform, see how to choose your motherboard in 2026.

The AM5 socket will also support the upcoming Ryzen Zen 6.
Two points to watch out for
- Intel Core from the 13th and 14th generation: Intel recommends the “Intel Default” BIOS settings and a microcode 0x12F or newer to counter instability linked to voltage degradation, with an extended 5-year warranty. Follow our guide to updating the BIOS for Intel’s 13th and 14th generation.
- Ryzen 7 9800X3D on ASRock motherboards: ASRock released an updated BIOS (4.10) in early 2026 after reported boot failures; update the BIOS if you have this combination.
