What is managed democracy?
It’s at the heart of the game’s humour. Super Earth presents itself as a “managed democracy”: a regime that talks about freedom in every sentence, but where everything is decided from the top and where even the slightest hesitation is seen as betrayal. The Helldivers are its elite soldiers, dropped onto hostile planets to “spread democracy”, no matter the cost.
The whole game plays the militaristic satire card, in the spirit of Starship Troopers: propaganda messages, patriotic salutes, heroic deaths in endless sequence. And it works, because the game never takes itself seriously, even though its battles, that part, are brutal.
Helldivers 2 is played with four, and a good PC makes a difference when the screen fills up with enemies.
Gameplay: missions, stratagems and friendly fire
One match is a squad of 1 to 4 players dropped onto a planet with objectives to complete, followed by an extraction that you must hold off under enemy fire. Three mechanics make up all the flavour of the game:
- Stratagems: orbital strikes, heavy weapons, turrets or resupply, called in by entering a button combination while the enemies charge you.
- Friendly fire always on: a poorly placed strike kills your teammates as reliably as it kills the enemy. It’s the source of half the laughs.
- The Galactic War: every mission counts. The “major orders” set by the developers mobilise the entire community, and the collective result moves the story forward in real time.

Helldivers 2 isn’t the heaviest game around right now, but big battles, with dozens of enemies, explosions and stratagems on screen, tax both the CPU and the graphics card. To stay smooth in 1080p and 1440p when things get hectic, a 16GB card and a recent processor make the difference.
