Second-generation 3D V-Cache: what changes
3D V-Cache is a layer of stacked cache memory on the chip: an additional 64 MB, directly within reach of the cores. Games are constantly requesting the same data, so they find what they need there without having to go via RAM, which is far slower.

The 9800X3D fits on an AM5 motherboard.
The novelty of the 9800X3D is the placement of this cache. In previous generations, it sat above the cores and limited their cooling, and therefore their clock speeds. AMD has moved it underneath instead: the cores are cooled directly, they can boost to higher frequencies and, for the first time on an X3D, the processor can be overclocked. All its cores are grouped on a single chip (a single CCD), which avoids latency between two core blocks during gaming.
Gaming performance of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D
In games, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the processor that delivers the highest number of frames per second in the vast majority of published tests, and the difference is most noticeable when the graphics card isn’t the limiting factor.

With a powerful graphics card, the 9800X3D lets high refresh-rate screens really shine.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D review: what TechSpot and PCWorld measure
TechSpot compared the 9800X3D with the 7800X3D across 45 games in 1080p with an RTX 4090 (test from 12 November 2024): it’s 8% faster on average, 11% in the 30 most CPU-demanding games, and the gap ranges from under 1% to 21% depending on the titles. PCWorld measures it at about 25% ahead of Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K in 1080p, and up to 45% in Cyberpunk 2077.
In 4K, it’s most often the graphics card that limits performance, so the CPU’s advantage shrinks. The 9800X3D makes the most sense in 1080p and 1440p with a 144 Hz monitor or higher, where every frame counts. VCG, the YouTuber, tested it in detail:
Against the 7800X3D, the 9950X3D and Intel
| Processor | Against the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in games | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 8% slower on average (45 games, 1080p) | TechSpot, November 2024 |
| Core Ultra 9 285K | about 25% slower in 1080p | PCWorld, November 2024 |
9800X3D vs 7800X3D
The 9800X3D is faster, runs cooler thanks to its cache placed under the cores, and supports overclocking. The 7800X3D is still an excellent processor, but cheaper: our article Ryzen 7 7800X3D in 2026 lays it all out. For a new PC, the 9800X3D is the investment that will last the longest.
9800X3D vs 9950X3D
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D adds eight cores, useful for video editing and 3D rendering. In games, it doesn’t deliver a clear advantage over the 9800X3D for a much higher price: for a gaming PC, the 9800X3D remains the most cost-effective choice.
Against Intel
With about a 25% lead over the Core Ultra 9 285K at 1080p, according to PCWorld, the 9800X3D takes the edge in games. Our guide Intel or AMD: which CPU to choose for a gaming PC compares the two brands, product line by product line.
9800X3D motherboard, RAM and cooling
The 9800X3D needs an AM5 motherboard (chipsets B650, B850, X670 or X870) with an up-to-date BIOS, and DDR5 memory. In our PCs, we pair it with 32 GB of DDR5, the comfortable amount for gaming and streaming in 2026 (see our article 16 GB or 32 GB of RAM).

Watercooling, DDR5 and a big graphics card: the 9800X3D’s natural habitat.
With a 120 W TDP, it’s easy to keep cool: a good dual-tower air cooler or a 240 mm AIO watercooling unit will keep it running at a great temperature while gaming.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D review: should you buy it in 2026?
Yes, if the game is your priority: the processor is the one that delivers the highest frames per second from your graphics card, and its AM5 platform leaves room to upgrade.
Workshop opinion
Pair it with a graphics card to match, starting from a RTX 5070 or a RX 9070 XT. With an entry-level card, a cheaper processor is enough, and the budget you save can be invested better in the graphics card.
