RTX 5090 gaming PC: which PC to choose in 2026 for 4K without compromise?

The RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s most powerful graphics card, and it sets the rules for the rest of the PC. PSU, case, processor: here’s how to build an RTX 5090 gaming PC in the workshop, and when an RTX 5080 is enough.

By the FlowUP team, gaming PC builder in Genappe (Belgium) · Updated 27 October 2026

In brief:

  • The GeForce RTX 5090: 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, 21,760 CUDA cores, 575 W, with a 1,000 W power supply recommended by NVIDIA.
  • In games: 27% faster than an RTX 4090 in 4K across 17 games, 12% faster in 1440p (TechSpot, launch test).
  • Who it is for: 4K at 144 Hz and beyond, uncompromising path tracing, local AI and 3D rendering.
  • Our advice: an RTX 5090 gaming PC is built around the power supply and cooling as much as the card itself. For 1440p, an RTX 5080 is more than enough.

A RTX 5090 that arrives at the workshop, you notice it: the box is huge, the card takes up a big chunk of the case, and the power supply we prepare alongside is 1,200 W. With a card like that, you build the PC around it.

If you’re looking for a RTX 5090 gaming PC, you already know what you want: the fastest machine possible. This guide explains what this power really changes in games, what you need around it to keep it going at the limit, and when an RTX 5080 would be a smarter choice.

RTX 5090: what the card is really worth in games

On paper, the RTX 5090 wipes out the rest of the GeForce lineup: Blackwell GB202 chip, 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB of GDDR7 connected via a 512-bit bus, and 575 W of announced power consumption. It launched on 30 January 2025 for $1,999 (launch price before tax in the United States) and supports DLSS 4 with multi-image generation.

The figure that matters, in workshop language: 27% better than the RTX 4090 in 4K, but only 12% in 1440p. In other words, the lower the resolution drops, the more the processor takes over, and the less often the 5090 gets the chance to show what it can do. Its place is in 4K: at that resolution, it exceeds 100 FPS without upscaling in heavy games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and DLSS 4 provides the headroom for 4K displays at 144 Hz and beyond.

RTX 5090 gaming PC: power and cooling first

NVIDIA recommends a 1,000 W power supply for a PC equipped with an RTX 5090. In our Kraken PC, we use 1,200 W in 80 Plus Gold: the card alone consumed an average of 492 W under load in the TechSpot tests, and AMD lists a Ryzen 9 9950X3D rated at 170 W.

  • The 12V-2x6 connector: it’s the point we check twice on a 575 W card. Native power-supply cable, fully seated connector, no tight bends right at the point where the cable exits the card.
  • The case: a partner RTX 5090 is often more than 30 cm long and takes up several slots. You need a large case with direct airflow, like the NZXT H9 Flow in our Kraken PC.
  • The processor: 360 mm water cooling, because the card’s heat warms up the entire case.
  • Shipping: to prevent any damage, we remove the RTX 5090 from the case before shipping and we send you a two-minute video tutorial to put it back in place.

This last point can sometimes be surprising, but it’s simple: a card that heavy travelling while still fitted in its PCIe slot is a risk we don’t take. For the rest of the sizing, our guide how to choose your PC power supply details the calculations, and our article RTX 5090 en RTX 5080, 32 en 16 GB VRAM explains what those 32 GB are really for.

RTX 5090 vs RTX 5080: which one for your PC?

The RTX 5080 is the playable 4K card and the 1440p at up to 240Hz choice; the RTX 5090 is the uncompromising 4K option for professional use. The decision comes down to the screen and how you’ll use it.

Our take: the rtx 5090 vs rtx 5080 means twice the cores and memory for twice the price, but not twice the frames per second in games. If you play at 1440p, even at 240Hz, our guide RTX 5080 gaming PC will save you several thousand pounds. If you game in 4K on a 144Hz screen or higher, if you run local AI models or do 3D rendering, the 5090 has no real replacement.

Workshop verdict

A 5090 gaming PC only makes sense with a fast 4K monitor or a real creative use case. In that case, don’t cut corners around the graphics card: a 1,200W 80 Plus Gold PSU, a large well-ventilated case, and a 360mm liquid cooler. You’ll find all of that in the Kraken PC. For everything else, and for most players, the RTX 5080 is the most sensible high-end gaming PC.

FAQ RTX 5090 gaming PC

What PSU for an RTX 5090?

Minimum 1,000W according to NVIDIA. In our Kraken PC, we go up to 1,200W with an 80 Plus Gold PSU and a native 12V-2x6 cable, to keep some headroom with a high-end processor.

Which processor for an RTX 5090 gaming PC?

A Ryzen X3D. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one of the fastest for pure gaming, while the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in our Kraken PC goes up to 16 cores for creation and multitasking without sacrificing gaming performance.

Is the RTX 5090 useful for gaming at 1440p?

Not really. Its lead over the RTX 4090 drops to 12% at 1440p versus 27% at 4K in TechSpot’s tests. In 1440p, an RTX 5080, or even an RTX 5070 Ti, does better for the money.
