Why buy a desktop PC in 2026? 7 advantages over a laptop

Power, price, upgrades, repairs: what a desktop does better, and when a laptop makes more sense

By the FlowUP team, gaming PC builder in Genappe (Belgium) · Updated 29 September 2026

In brief: in 2026, a desktop PC is still the best choice as soon as you want power (gaming, editing, 3D), a system that lasts and can be upgraded piece by piece, and the best performance-for-price ratio. Under the same name, a desktop graphics card is more powerful than its laptop version: the desktop RTX 5070 has 12 GB of video memory, while the laptop version has 8 GB. The laptop has a clear advantage: portability. If you mostly play at home, the desktop wins.

Does a desktop PC still have a place in 2026?

Laptops have never been as powerful, that’s true. But as soon as we’re talking about recent games, video editing or long sessions, the desktop PC still has advantages that miniaturisation can’t erase: room for cooling, more powerful components under the same name, and the ability to change everything.

Here are the seven reasons, in our view as a PC builder, that still tip the balance in favour of the desktop, and the situations where a laptop makes more sense.

The 7 advantages of a desktop PC

1. More power under the same name

A laptop graphics card isn’t the same as the desktop graphics card of the same name: it often has fewer cores, less memory, and a limited power draw to fit in a slim chassis. The GeForce RTX 5070 for laptops has 8 GB of video memory, versus 12 GB for the desktop version; the RTX 5090 for laptops has 24 GB, versus 32 GB.

2. A better performance-to-price ratio

With the same budget, a desktop PC generally offers a graphics card one tier higher. You don’t pay for the screen, the battery, or the miniaturisation.

3. It grows with you

Graphics card, memory, storage, power supply, and even the processor on a recent platform: everything can be replaced. On a laptop, only the memory and SSD are sometimes accessible.

4. It’s easy to repair

The components are standard. A fan or power supply that fails can be replaced in a few minutes, without having to send the whole machine back.

5. Cooler and quieter

A large case and large fans cool at lower RPM. Result: less noise while gaming and performance that doesn’t drop after an hour of play.

6. Better ergonomics

Eye-level screen, keyboard and mouse of your choice, multiple monitors: for long sessions, it’s more comfortable than a laptop perched on a desk.

7. A longer lifespan

Because it can be upgraded and repaired, a well-designed desktop PC can keep up with multiple generations of games by replacing one or two parts instead of buying everything again.

When should you choose a laptop instead?

If you’re often on the move, go to LAN parties, live in shared accommodation, or in a student residence with limited space, a gaming laptop makes perfect sense. Then choose a model with a real GeForce RTX graphics card and check its electrical power, not just its name.

Many players use both: a desktop PC at home to play, and a lightweight laptop to work on the go. We compare the two options in detail in Desktop gaming PC or laptop: which should you choose in 2026?, and our laptops are in the category gaming laptops.

With equal performance, usually yes: you don’t pay for the screen, the battery, or miniaturisation. You do need to budget for the screen and peripherals.

Is a laptop graphics card worth the same as the desktop version?

No, under the same name it’s less powerful: fewer cores, often less memory, and limited power consumption.
