In brief:

  • For gaming: a Ryzen 7 X3D gaming PC (7800X3D or 9800X3D) is what’s best in 2026, thanks to its massive 3D V-Cache.
  • 7800X3D or 9800X3D: 3.4% difference in 1080p according to TechPowerUp. The 7800X3D is the best value for money, while the 9800X3D goes for the latest frames.
  • Ryzen 7 without X3D: the 9700X and 5700X remain good 8-core processors for gaming and creating, a step behind for games.
  • Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 9: Ryzen 5 is enough for 1080p, Ryzen 9 is mainly for creation.

On a gaming PC spec sheet, “Ryzen 7” can refer to very different processors. A 2022 Ryzen 7 5700X and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D share the same product-line name, but not at all the same gaming level.

Choosing a Ryzen 7 gaming PC therefore first means choosing the right suffix: X3D or not. We’ll explain what changes, which Ryzen 7 to pair with which graphics card, and which AMD gaming PCs we build in Genappe.

Why does a Ryzen 7 X3D gaming PC dominate in games?

The Ryzen 7 X3Ds have 96 MB of L3 cache, three times more than a standard Ryzen 7: the processor has to fetch its data from RAM less often, and games run faster. This is AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology: a stack of cache stacked onto the chip.

In games, this cache makes a real difference. In its test, TechPowerUp measures the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as 11% faster in 1080p than the Ryzen 7 9700X, which nevertheless has the same architecture and the same 8 cores. Against the best Intel chips from the 14th generation, the lead is 7%. For a PC dedicated to gaming, this is the processor we recommend first.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D gaming PC: which should you choose?

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the most cost-effective choice; the 9800X3D is worth the extra with an RTX 5080 or higher, and for competitive gaming at very high refresh rates.

According to TechPowerUp, the 9800X3D beats the 7800X3D by 3.4% in 1080p. With a mid-range graphics card, and as soon as you move up to 1440p, that gap shrinks even further: the graphics card becomes the limiting factor.

The 9800X3D has another advantage: its cache is placed under the cores, allowing it to boost to higher frequencies and do better outside of games.

A Ryzen on the AM5 socket: the 7800X3D and 9800X3D can be built on the same platform.

Our workshop rule: 7800X3D with up to the RTX 5070 Ti or the RX 9070 XT, 9800X3D beyond that. Several of our PCs, such as the Apex V2 or the Orion, also offer the option to upgrade from the 7800X3D to the 9800X3D on the product page. To go further, read our tests of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Ryzen 7 9700X or 5700X: an AMD gaming PC without X3D, worth it?

Yes, if the PC is also used for creating or if the budget is tight: a Ryzen 7 without X3D remains a fast 8-core, just a bit less comfortable in games that put a heavy load on the processor.

  • Ryzen 7 9700X: Zen 5 architecture, 5.5 GHz and a 65 W TDP. It runs cool and performs very well for video editing. It’s the processor in the Requiem PC, paired with an RTX 5070 Ti.
  • Ryzen 7 5700X: AM4 platform and DDR4, so 32 GB of RAM for far less than DDR5, an actual advantage with the rise in RAM prices in 2026. This is the heart of the Rampage V2 PC, with an RTX 5070.

The Ryzen 7 5700X is the oldest on the list: its AM4 platform will no longer evolve. Still, it runs an RTX 5070 really well at 1440p, and it’s the most cost-effective way to get 8 cores and 32 GB of RAM.

Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 9 gaming PC: when should you switch up a tier?

A Ryzen 5 gaming PC is enough to play at 1080p and often at 1440p; a Ryzen 9 gaming PC only really makes sense for heavy content creation.

  • Ryzen 5: 6 cores, ideal with an RTX 5060 or an RTX 5070. Our PC Spatium (Ryzen 5 9600X) and PC Ghost (Ryzen 5 7500X3D, with 3D V-Cache) are good examples.
  • Ryzen 9: 12 or 16 cores for 3D rendering, compilation, or 4K editing. In gaming, a Ryzen 9 X3D is roughly on par with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Our article Ryzen 7 ou Ryzen 9 covers the issue.

On the Intel side, the logic is the same: read our guide PC gamer i7 if you’re torn between the two brands.

The workshop’s take

For gaming, the Ryzen 7 gaming PC we most often recommend is the 7800X3D with a solid graphics card: the PC Apex V2 and its RX 9070 XT, or the PC Polaris in a fully white version. A Ryzen 7 9800X3D only really makes sense with an RTX 5080, or if you play competitively on a 240 Hz monitor. And if you also edit videos, the PC Requiem and its Ryzen 7 9700X are a very good compromise.
